Off Season Purchase
Iconic husband and wife Drag Racing team Reed Racing have been keeping themselves busy during the ANDRA Championship Drag Racing off-season by planning their assault on the 2008/2009 Series which begins in mid September. In big news for the team, they have announced that they have acquired the sister car to team boss Steven Reed’s 3500 horsepower Camaro with the plan of running a two car Top Alcohol Funny Car team in the near future. The vehicle is the former Fabietti Racing and 2007 Winternationals runner up vehicle, with team driver Debbie Reed in line to trade her current Dragster for the new purchase. If all goes to plan this will mean both Steven and Debbie will be behind the wheel of identical specification machines in the professional Top Alcohol bracket under the Reed Racing banner. “I will still be racing my Dragster at the Australian National’s at the Western Sydney International Dragway, and will then take the new Funny Car out to Willowbank Raceway when we return to Brisbane to see how I adjust to it,” Debbie Reed said. “It will be the first time in around 20 years that I have driven a front engined race car and I have spent my entire Group One career in a Dragster so we will have to see how I go getting used to it all.” “If I am happy with the feel of the new car the plan is then to campaign the Reed Racing team with two Top Alcohol Funny Cars.” “We will still be keeping the Dragster though as a spare car and may have Daniel (Reed) race it for the team at selected Rounds of Championship when his work commitments with V8 Supercars permit.” Debbie’s husband Steven Reed is now currently in the process of setting up the new car for her after the team took possession of it over the weekend. As well as updating to a more modern vehicle, he can also see many other benefits in running the new Funny Car alongside his existing one. “When I first purchased my Camaro Funny Car from the USA around 18 months ago, Maurice (Fabietti) also brought the sister car out which is identical to the one I race,” Steven Reed said. “At the moment Debbie’s Dragster and my Funny Car run completely different engine combinations and setups and we can’t really compare any data or interchange many of the components between them.” “But now this isn’t the case, we will have two state of the art machines where everything will be identical except the seating positions. This will help us with our parts inventory and also on the race track with us having twice the data to use for our tune ups.” “Another benefit for us will be having a complete spare Top Alcohol car ready to race, as well as an extra driver in Daniel (Reed), who is the 2007 Australian Supercharged Outlaws Champion and is licensed to drive both Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Dragsters.” The Reed Racing team will next be taking to the track for the 2008/2009 ANDRA Top Alcohol Championship Drag Racing Series season opener, the Australian Nationals, held at the Western Sydney International Dragway from the 12th-14th September.

The Reed Racing team really shook up the Top Alcohol field at the Western Sydney International Dragway’s Nitro Champs over the weekend (2nd-3rd May) when they were able to get both husband Steven Reed’s 3500 horsepower Funny Car and wife Debbie Reed’s Dragster into the Finals field.

This was the first time in 2008 the team had their two car Top Alcohol assault back to together with the return to Championship racing of Debbie Reed, and they didn’t disappoint the huge crowds that attended. The mother of two occupied the number 5 qualifying position and was especially happy with her times in the tough field considering it was her first event since December last year.

“My first goal this weekend in Sydney was to make the top 8 which is getting harder and harder with such quality competition,” Debbie Reed said. “So to go out and run a 5.8 (second pass) and qualify 5th was extremely pleasing for both me and my team that have worked extremely hard to get me back out racing.” “Despite a problem with my rear wing delaminating and me having to shut off in my Quarter-Final, we feel we are right back on track with our development program that should see us moving up the field even further.”

“I can’t wait now to get back out there at the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway in June to shake things up even more amongst the guys.”

Steven Reed also had a solid weekend qualifying 6th behind Debbie despite suffering tyre shake issues as his Funny Car as he over powered the racing surface. After not being able to put down a top 8 time on his first two qualifying runs, and the track becoming increasingly more slippery as the night went on, he was able to call on all of his Drag Racing expertise and skills to pull off a 6.0 second quarter mile pass on his final attempt to secure the number 6 position.

“We were having a bit of trouble in early qualifying getting the power to track and I had to do a couple of peddles which wrecked my runs,” Steven Reed said. “It was all or nothing on the last attempt which was when the track was probably at its worst, luckily though I was able to get down and into the Eliminations rounds.” “I then went out in the Quarter-Finals but gained enough points to climb up the Championship ladder inside the top 5 with just one round remaining.”

The Reed Racing team will next be taking to the track for the final round of the ANDRA Top Alcohol Championship Drag Racing series, the Winternationals held Willowbank Raceway, Queensland from the 5th-8th June.

The largest Drag Racing event in the Southern Hemisphere and the finale of the Australian National Drag Racing series rocked Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway last weekend (June 8-10) when it hosted the 40th anniversary of the Winternationals.

One of the local standouts was Brisbane’s Daniel Reed from the Reed Racing team who wrapped up his first Australian Championship with a win in the Supercharged Outlaws bracket at the event.

In front of a near capacity crowd, Daniel drove his ‘Start Ya Bastard’ Altered to victory which not only sealed the National Title for him, but also the Willowbank Raceway track Championship.

“The pressure was really on me to perform at the event, I was leading the points chase going into the Winternationals but there were 5 other competitors that could have overtaken me,” Daniel said.

“I knew though we were a good chance to take the title so I just went out there and did what we had been doing all season.”

“To win a Winternationals title is an achievement that all Australian Drag Racers strive to achieve, so to win the event and the Australian Championship on the same day is just unbelievable.”

“I would really like to thank my sponsors Nulon and Start Ya Bastard, the fans, my crew and everyone involved with the Reed Racing team for giving me the opportunity to get where I am today.”

The Reed Racing team also contented the professional Top Alcohol bracket at the event with Steven Reed driving his Nulon Engine Oils Funny Car and Debbie Reed in her Nulon Dragster.

With consistent results throughout the season, both of the teams entries in what is one of the most competitive bracket in the sport, finished inside the Top 5 of the Championship with Steven securing the number 3 plate and Debbie number 5.

“Finishing the season with both of our Nulon cars inside the Top 5 in the Australian Championship in what has arguably been one of the most competitive seasons in Top Alcohol history,” Stevens said.

“The bracket has really come of age and is now one of the leading categories in Australian Drag Racing, so it is a great achievement for the team to gain the result it has.”

“It would have been great to go further than the quarter finals at the Winternationals after qualifying well in 4th position, but over all the 2006/2007 season has been a resounding success for the entire Reed Racing team.”

“I would again like to thank all of our team sponsors, the crew, the fans and to all those who have helped us gain our excellent results this year.”

Throughout the season the team has stocked up their trophy cabinet with some great results that have included an East Coast Nationals Top Alcohol win (Debbie Reed), Australian Nationals Supercharged Outlaws win (Daniel Reed), Summernationals Top Alcohol runner up (Steven Reed), Summernationals Supercharged Outlaws runner up (Daniel Reed) and a Winternationals Supercharged Outlaws win (Daniel Reed).

With Daniel’s success throughout the year the team have also decided to licence him in Stevens Nulon Engine Oils Funny Car as a backup driver should he be required.

Following the completion of the Winternationals Daniel took control of the 3500 horsepower vehicle for the first time and spectacularly reeled off a pass of 5.71 at approximately 400 kph during licensing. This time would have been good enough for the number 4 qualifying position in the Top Alcohol bracket at the Winternationals.
